Template Tests - How to Set Up
Set up a Template Test with ABConvert in a few simple steps
Step 1: Assign Templates to Products or Pages
Before starting a Template Test, ensure that the templates you want to test are assigned to specific products or pages in your Shopify store. Follow these steps:
Create or Duplicate Templates: Use your Shopify theme editor to create a new template or duplicate an existing one.
Publish Templates: Ensure that at least one template is published, as ABConvert can only select published templates for testing.
Note: If you’re using a third-party page builder app like GemPages or Shogun, make sure the products you want to test are selected in the app’s product page (PDP) settings before proceeding.
Step 2: Create a New Template Test

Navigate to the "Create New Test" section in ABConvert.
Select "Create Template Test" from the available options.
Provide basic details such as the test name and description.
Step 3: Select Original and Variant Templates

Original Template: Choose a published template from your theme as the control group (original version).
Variant Templates: Select one or more alternate templates to test against the original. You can either:
Duplicate the original template and make edits.
Use a completely different template from your theme.
Important: For product pages, ensure that only products assigned to these templates will render correctly during the test.
Step 4: Configure Traffic Allocation
Decide how much traffic should be directed to each template:
Split traffic evenly (e.g., 50% original, 50% variant).
Customize traffic percentages based on your testing goals.
This ensures that visitors are randomly assigned to different templates for unbiased results.
Step 5: Launch and Preview Your Test
Once your test is set up:
Preview each template using the provided preview links.
Check that all templates display correctly and that products are rendering as expected.
Launch your test when ready.
Step 6: Monitor Analytics
After launching, monitor your test’s performance in ABConvert’s analytics dashboard:
Key Metrics: Track conversion rates, add-to-cart events, checkout rates, and other relevant metrics.
Visitor Behavior: Analyze how visitors interact with each template version.
Staying Time: Understand how long users are engaging with each page variant.
